En confrontant certains textes de l’Encyclopédie à ceux de L’Esprit des lois de Montesquieu, il s’agit de montrer comment les contributeurs, notamment Jaucourt, reprennent et transforment ses thèses, en particulier sur l’esclavage. L’usage d’outils d’intelligence artificielle, fondés sur la détection des reprises textuelles, permet d’identifier ces emprunts de manière systématique et d’en mesurer les écarts. Cette approche met en lumière le rôle de l’Encyclopédie dans les débats économiques et politiques de son temps, tout en soulignant à la fois les enjeux méthodologiques liés au recours aux humanités numériques et les enjeux théoriques liés à la compréhension des textes dans les espaces littéraires polémiques de la République des Lettres. This article examines the relevance of comparison in the history of ideas through the case of Diderot and d’Alembert’s Encyclopédie and its relationship to eighteenth-century political economy. By confronting the Encyclopédie with Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws, it shows how contributors – particularly Jaucourt – appropriated and transformed Montesquieu’s arguments, especially on slavery. The use of artificial intelligence tools, based on the detection of textual borrowings, makes it possible to systematically identify these references and to measure the variations they undergo.
