Si des études d’histoire ou d’architecture font déjà état des multiples enjeux associés à cet espace, ses fonctions dans le roman et le cinéma à partir des années 1940 restent à étudier. Les « scènes de diner » constituent pourtant des étapes révélatrices pour l’univers fictionnel, tributaires de la construction d’un sujet moderne désorienté. Fondée sur le redoublement et la répétition des mêmes objets et aménagements, la reproductibilité inhérente au diner américain est à l’origine d’un nouveau rapport à l’espace, propice au déploiement de l’intériorité du sujet. Abstract: The diner has become the epitome of post-industrial America in the grip of mass consumerism and is an omnipresent space in twentieth-century American literary and cinematographic fiction, sometimes translated as "roadhouse" or "restaurant". While studies of History and Architecture have already revealed the many issues associated with this space, its functions in novels and films from the 1940s onwards remain to be studied. However, the diner scenes constitute revealing stages for the fictional universe, dependent on the construction of a disoriented modern subject.
